Mazda is a car company known for choosing its own path in the automotive market.

The Miata was the resurrection of the classic roadster, and it proved to be a stroke of genius. Their Mazda Speed3 and Speed6 are both accomplished sedans that provide high horsepower fun at reasonable prices. Their CX-7 and CX-9 crossovers offer far more style and driving fun than most of their competitors. But the RX-8 represents one of the more “different” of the Mazda products.

Instead of a 4-, 6- or 8-cylinder engine, the RX-8 uses a one-third-liter rotary engine. Despite its tiny displacement, this modern marvel pumps out 232 horsepower when coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission, and 212 when yoked to the available 6-speed automatic. In both cases, the torque output is 159 pound-feet.
