Pierre Home-Douglas was shocked one morning to discover his seven-year-old Mazda Protégé had been pinched. With 140,000 kilometres on it and a missing hubcap, Home-Douglas said he didn't expect anyone to target his vehicle. As astounded as he was, only three days later, he was even more surprised to find his stolen car. "I couldn't believe it. It was only parked maybe a quarter-mile from my house," he said.

Pierre ran home and called police, who told him to wait. He waited – for more than an hour, then called the police station again. "They said, ‘Well, we're very busy right now,'" said Home-Douglas. An hour later, police arrived. But by then, the car was gone. It had been stolen. Again. Pierre was livid. "The whole letdown of having it stolen, then the sheer relief of having found it and realizing I wouldn't have to buy a new car – and then suddenly it's taken away from me again," he explained.

He didn't take it well, and lashed out at police. "I was on my bike. I took it and heaved it though the air and bent the handlebars… and I was yelling and swearing at the cops," he said.

The police were able to redeem themselves, though, said Home-Douglas, because later that night, they found the car. "An off-duty cop was playing hockey at the arena and saw the Protégé," he said.

Despite the ordeal, at least the thieves left him with some gifts: new CDs. Trouble is, it's not Home-Douglas's style. "It's stuff like Queen, which I'm not too keen on," he said.
